A Chronology of EverQuest!

Many thanks to thank Loral, Jerone and Iceblossom, Nanyea, Nolrog, and especially the Spirit Realm posters for their input, past and future; most of this information was collected from the usual sources, with their input - and, as always, help from the Shaman community.

If I'm missing any important events, like other server splits/merges, major revamps, or dates and guilds for first kills on expansion bosses... that kind of thing, please let me know. I'll be happy to make any needed corrections or additions.

Planes of Power

Fourth Expansion
Released:
October 2, 2002
New Content:
The Planes of Power
New Travel: Knowledge Portals, instant travel from outside of most starting cities to the Plane of Knowledge.
Raid Zones: Initially, almost all of them; very complicated progression; introduced raid management tools for up to 72 players.
New Top Achievment: Level 65. Gear from Plane of Time dwarfs even the finest gear from previous expansions, but progression is very hard for those who haven't been gearing up in VT.
General: Introduction of much more difficult (and progressive) raid content (see flagging diagram). Plane of War scrapped and events moved to Plane of Tactics.
Lore: Cross over to realms of ancient power, where legendary creatures guard long-hidden secrets. Go to places not meant for mortal eyes, reveal treasures and challenges mightier than any before, and bring you face to face with the gods themselves. Prepare yourself, the Planes await!
Snapshot: At this point in the game, the very best Warrior Raid BP was probably:

Raex's Chestplate of Destruction
AC: +100 Str: +30 Dex: +25 Sta: +30 Agi: +25 HP: +250 Weight: 20.0
Fire Resist: +20 Disease Resist: +20 Cold Resist: +20 Magic Resist: +20 Poison Resist: +20
Effect: Echo of Anger (Increase Agro Multiplier by 15%), Riposte: +8%, Shielding: +3%
Elemental Quest armor, with the Timeless Breastplate Mold dropping from Quarm (L80) and Rallos Zek (L75) in Plane of Time.

Nanyea recalls: Some Notable Events during Planes of Power

It was a race among Township Rebellion, Afterlife and Fires of Heaven to beat Rallos Zek the Warlord first. FoH wins through an exploit and their flags are removed... Afterlife wins the first legit kill, then Township Rebellion, then Fires of Heaven.

Township Rebellion wins the first Xegony and Fennin Ro kills; Afterlife beats Rathe Council about 15 minutes before Township Rebellion; and some unknown guild takes out Cornaiv first. Fires of Heaven is close to disbanding at this point.

Fires of Heaven finally breaks into Time as Afterlife and Township Rebellion are struggling in Tier 4, but falls out of the race with membership turnover.

First Quarm kill is by Township Rebellion, followed 30 minutes later by Afterlife.

The first level 65 toon is a Rogue by the name of Drexen at 68 hours after the servers came up; first 65 Enchanter was Nanyea, three hours later.

Live Event: Frogloks oust Trolls, rename Grobb to Gukta; Trolls move to Neriak - all in conjunction with Legacy of Ykesha release

Legacy of Ykesha

Fifth "Extension"
Released:
February 23, 2003
New Content:
Ykesha; Froglok race.
New Travel: Drogmors.
Raid Zones: None, really
New Top Achievment: None; many minor enhancements (maps, more bank space, armor dyes, charm slot, LFG tool).
General: Content geared for the level 30 to 50 crowd; added some new "must-have" spells like Temperance and cure spells for healer classes. Bank space doubled from 8 to 16 slots.
Lore: Troll clans have long fought amongst themselves for the right to rule their race. With the creation of the Night Keep, the Grobb clan firmly established its dominance over the trolls. The Broken Skull clan was driven from the city and built a stronghold of its own. Years later, in a flood of brutish strength and cunning the trolls of the Broken Skull clan returned, and by their actions forever changed Norrath.
Snapshot: This release brought no upgrades to top-end gear.

Misc: Casino comes and goes; 2 shared bank slots and shared platinum slot added

Lost Dungeons of Norrath

Sixth Expansion
Released:
September 9, 2003
New Content:
Instanced group and raid content on Antonica and Faydwer; introduction of Augmentation slots on gear.
New Travel: Instant transport among Wayfarer Camps via Magus.
Raid Zones: Sadly, raid instance rewards were useless to those well-geared enough to win the raids.
New Top Achievment: None for raiders; however, this was a great expansion for the one to two hour a night player, who could slowly accumulate gear on par with that from the Elemental Planes; resurgence in pickup grouping, especially with LFG tool from LoY.
General: Casual players and non-raiders could finally catch up to within about 80% of the equipment level of their Time raiding counterparts; this narrowed the raider/nonraider gap for the first time in a long time. With the introduction of augmentation slots, players for the first time could plan, customize and acquire precisely the gear they wanted, rather than merely being at the mercy of the random number generator. +40 HP Augs were a big boost to raiders and nonraiders alike.
Lore: After joining the Wayfarers Brotherhood, you and your group undertake perilous new adventures into the recently unearthed Lost Dungeons of Norrath. These new adventures offer many benefits, including a clearly defined goal, the ability to play and make progress in a couple hours per adventure, and the confidence that you can set a time to meet your friends and have a dungeon fully available for you right away - no competition and no waiting!
Snapshot: This release brought no upgrades to top-end gear.

Between Releases

New Zones: Nedaria's Landing

Mob News: Kerafyrm (The Sleeper) killed on Rallos Zek by a three-guild force of Ascending Dawn, Wudan and Magus Imperialis Magicus, November 23, 2003

Gates of Discord

Seventh Expansion
Released:
February 10, 2004
New Content:
Continent of Taelosia; Berserker class.
New Travel: More Magus destinations.
Raid Zones: All the zones past Kod'Taz; static and instanced zones of Ikkinz, Yxtta, Uqua, Qvic, Inktu'ta, Txevu and finally Tacvi.
New Top Achievment: Group and Raid Leadershp Abilities; new AAs; also ever more powerful raid (and single group content) rewards.
General: Almost totally avoided by non-raiders; content was much harder than anything previous, and only raiders had the hardiness and flexibility to survive many of the encounters initially. Also brought some graphics upgrades and more granular control of effects for each user.
Lore: The greatest threat to the world of Norrath has been unleashed in EverQuest! The lost continent of Taelosia has been discovered and a massive assault force, the Legion of Mata Muram, is creating chaos and devastation on this once peaceful continent. Help protect your world while adventuring in many new zones, including a stony city, sprawling temples, a myriad of catacombs, and a maze of sewers.
Snapshot: At this point in the game, the very best Warrior Raid BP was probably:

Omens of War

Eighth Expansion
Released:
September 14, 2004
New Content:
Realm of Discord.
New Travel: Teleportation by Priests of Discord.
Raid Zones: Citidel of Anguish, Muramite Provinggrounds, select other mobs.
New Top Achievment: Level 70, new AAs, including some rewarded for MPG trials.
General: This expansion was very well received by both raider and nonraider, especially after the lackluster response to GoD. One-groupable upgrades for nearly every non-raider were available in almost every zone, progressively better rewards as the zones became harder. Custom titles introduced. First toon to level 70 was a Rogue named Llyren on the Xev server, less than 23 hours after the servers came up.
Lore: The Wayfarers Brotherhood is considering meeting the Muramites on their home turf to end their tyrannical ways once and for all, in a place called the Realm of Discord. Taelosians have told the Wayfarers Brotherhood that the lands of Discord are most surely a twisted and volatile place - even the Muramites seem to fear them. Word tells of constant war there. No one knows when the Realm of Discord and its counterpart, the Realm of Order, came into existence. In both are rulers that are all-knowing and all-seeing, yet are never seen or touched - much like the Nameless.
Snapshot: At this point in the game, the very best Warrior Raid BP was probably:

Gladiator's Plate Chestguard of War
AC: +130 Str: +30 Dex: +25 Sta: +30 Cha: +25 Agi: +25 HP: +360 End: +315 Weight: 15.0

Effect: Guardian's Bravery, Deafening Strike, Attack: +50, Avoidance: +10, Combat Effects: +12, Regeneration: +10, Shielding: +6%
Slot 1: Type 8
Trelak's Plate ("OoW Tier 2") Armor, with Jayruk's Vest dropping from Arch Magus Vangl (L80) and Overlord Mata Muram (L90) in the Citadel of Anguish, and with three Ceremonial Dragorn Candles, droping from dragorns (L68-70) in Muramite Proving Grounds.

Between Releases

Zone Adjustments: Castle Mistmore, Infected Paw (Splitpaw) and Lavastorm (in preparation for DoN release) revamped

Live Events: Forces Firiona Vie and Lanys T'Vyl clash; Lanys takes over outpost of Firiona Vie; goodies displace Drolvargs - all in conjunction with or preparation for Dragons of Norrath release

Server Merges: 2/8 Rallos Zek, Tallon Zek, Vallon Zek and Sullon Zek merge to form Zek and use the Rallos Zek ruleset.

Misc: Introduction of Veteran's rewards.

Dragons of Norrath

Ninth Expansion
Released:
February 15, 2005
New Content:
Guild Lobby with corpse retrieval services; Guild Hall, with teleport chamber, bank, guild bank and tradeskill equipment. Previously uncharted areas north of Lavastorm, "The Broodlands" which lead to temples of Goblins, Kirin and animated Statues... and more Dragons!
New Travel: Teleportaion chamber in Guild Hall, goes (one way) to most Druid port locations.
Raid Zones: Instanced versions of static zones include boss mobs.
New Top Achievment: Just a few AAs, tied to progression quests at both group and raid level.
General: Well received by more casual players, the raiding crowd found limited rewards compared to the previous expansions. This release signalled the return of earning points with the NPCs and being able to plan out (and chip away at achieving) very good items (for nonraiders). It also added "Grandmaster" player crafted armor and special, powerful augments that could only go in DoN crafted or point-purchased armor. Introduced Bandolier and Potion Belt.
Lore: Return to the lands between Halas and Lavastorm as you seek out the Nest, the ancestral birthplace of all dragons, long sealed away and hidden from the eyes of Norrath. But beware, if the Nest is exposed too early during the Brood Dawn, all dragons and their eggs will be cursed for eternity and death will storm down on all Norrathian's not in their service.
Snapshot: While this release brought no upgrades to the very best top-end main slots, some very good non-main slot (range, ear, etc.) items and augments were introduced. Additionally, the best Dragon-dropped Armor was very comparable to GoD Abysmal quest armor (and much more convenient, dropping ready-to-equip without needing a flagged raid):

Frosted Cuirass of Enlightenment (dropped from Kessdona)
AC: +110 Str: +22 Sta: +23 Wis: +17 Int: +17 Agi: +18 HP: +285 Mana: +270 End: +270 Weight: 12.0

Slot 1: Type 8
Droping from Kessdona the Enlightened (L80) in The Ascent (instanced); Kessdona drops chest pieces of all types, as Rikkukin the Defender (L80), also in The Ascent (instanced) does leg items.

Depths of Darkhollow

Tenth Expansion
Released:
September 13, 2005
New Content:
Underground regions with new NPC races and mostly group-based progression.
New Travel: Teleportaion chamber in Guild Hall, goes (one way) to most Druid port locations.
Raid Zones: Instanced versions of static zones include boss mobs.
New Top Achievment: Once again, more AAs, including some tied to progression quests, both group and raid level.
General: Hailed (so far) by both raider and nonraider for (after adjustment) level- and content-appropriate rewards for group tasks. Introduction of Monster Missions, where content can be tuned in advance, since players will chose characters and abilities from specific templates. Spirit Shrouds turned out to be mostly a novelty; evolving items introduced, which need to be leveled up to reach maximum potency.
Lore: Norrathians have discovered lost continents and regions, a moon, and even another realm, but they have never seen the depths beneath their feet -- a place called Darkhollow. In this place where daylight has never shown its grace, there is a constant struggle to survive. Even the Duke of Below, Brell Serilis, saw its horrors and would not create a home for his children within it. In EverQuest Depths of Darkhollow, you will encounter a cavernous world where the unexpected should be expected. You will see shades of the familiar, like the gnomeworks, machines that harbor the souls of the lost Ak'Anon mining Expedition 328. Deeper still, a strong and powerful breed of drachnid, half dark elf, half arachnid, can be seen skittering about their sickly hive. And the echoing howls of the progeny of Norrath's first werewolves haunt this lightless world.
Snapshot: At this point in the game, the very best rewards from this expansion have not yet been popularized. However, with Last Blood augments and DoN Tradeskilled armor, people report combinations like this to presently the best Warrior BPs in the game:

Grandmaster's Wealdstone Cuirass (Fully Augmented)
AC: 187 STR: +31 DEX: +27 STA: +33 CHA: +7 WIS: +10 INT: +11 AGI: +33 HP: +450 MANA: +250 ENDUR: +400 WEIGHT: 4.6

Focus Effect: Improved Parry III, Attack: +25, Regeneration: +6, Damage shield: +1,
Accuracy: +7%, Shielding: +2%, Stun resist: +2%, Dot shielding: +2%
Slot 1, type 7: Flameshield Stone
Slot 2, type 11: Black Gemstone Of Pain
Slot 3, type 12: Last Blood of the Duelist
Required drops are too numerous to list; however, most bits are droppable/tradable.
